BRANTFORD, ONT. – The Brantford, Ont.-based Skills2Advance Try a Trade program is putting a notice out to employers that there’s a chance to hire job-ready graduates for work in construction.

Try a Trade provides job-seekers with eight weeks of free training in the fundamental skills required to work in in-demand jobs in modern manufacturing and construction, explains a release.

The training is then followed by an eight-week work placement. The program wants to work with area companies who have openings. Companies receive a wage subsidy and additional supports if they participate.

Try a Trade is offered by the Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie in partnership with Six Nations Polytechnic (classes take place at its Brantford campus), the CWB Welding Foundation, and Brant Skills Centre. The pre-apprenticeship program is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.

Participants receive training in CNC Machining, welding, metal fabrication, computer-assisted design, 3D printing and robotics, as well as hand and power tools used in general construction, the release adds. Additional training covers forklift operation, health and safety, first aid and soft skills such as workplace communication.

The first class of 12 students has already graduated. Future classes run Aug. 25 to Oct. 17 and Oct. 27 to Dec. 19.
