EDMONTON — Country singer Corb Lund’s petition effort to outlaw new coal mining on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains has been given the official go-ahead to gather signatures.

The petition calls for the government to introduce legislation prohibiting any new coal mining activity in the area.

Lund will have four months — until June 10 — to collect just under 178,000 signatures.

If he’s successful, the Alberta legislature would then consider passing a coal mining ban or send the issue to a provincewide vote.

Lund has been a vocal opponent of new coal mining exploration and development.

He has said the majority of Albertans want to protect land and water in the area.
