The 36 megawatts (MW) project was first consented in July 2021 and construction started in 2023. It first generated electricity in March 2026 and is now fully operational with the capacity to power the equivalent of around 51,000 typical homes.
Camster II is RWE’s fourth operational wind farm in Caithness, adding to a growing cluster in the area. Camster II consists of 10 turbines and is one of four new RWE onshore wind farms in Scotland under construction and the first to be completed and commissioned. Together the four wind farms total up to 232 MW.
Principal contractor Farrans supported over 50 roles during the construction works, welcomed two early careers civil engineering students and an apprentice. The contractor also appointed 54% of all its subcontractors from within 20 miles of the site, including Gow Earthworks, GMR Hendersons and John Gunn and Sons, and representing 56% of the total subcontract spend.
Camster II will now use locally based engineers and experts for operations and maintenance, further reinforcing local job security. Farrans is continuing to work with RWE, this time supporting the construction of its Golticlay wind farm.
