Westburne brought its national centennial celebration to Laval, Que., this week, gathering customers, supplier partners and employees to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping Quebec’s electrical industry.

The event marked the company’s 100th anniversary, with a series of events across Canada to follow, along with a new workforce development program that will award 12 scholarships across four provinces.

“Our centennial is a celebration of the people and partnerships that have defined Westburne for the past 100 years,” said Anshul Mathur, president, Westburne. “The relationships we’ve built over the past century have shaped who we are today, and they will continue to guide us as we help our customers navigate the opportunities and challenges shaping Canada’s electrical industry for the next 100 years.”

The Laval event was the second stop on Westburne’s national centennial tour, building on a kickoff event in Brandon, Man., earlier this summer.

Founded in 1926, Westburne has grown from its roots in Western Canada into one of the country’s largest electrical supply distributors with more than 100 branches nationwide. As the company has grown, it has evolved alongside its customers, expanding its capabilities to meet the changing needs of Canada’s electrical industry.

Along the way, Westburne has supplied billions of metres of cable – enough to reach the moon and back three times – while supporting projects across the country, from hospitals to schools and factories, commercial developments and critical infrastructure.

While the centennial tour recognizes Westburne’s history, the events are also focused on current challenges facing the electrical industry.

Across Canada’s construction, industrial and energy sectors, customers are navigating complex technological change while balancing productivity, supply chain resilience and the increasing demand for skilled labour.

The events provide an opportunity for customers, supplier partners and Westburne team members to exchange ideas, share perspectives and explore how the industry is responding to those changes.

For Westburne, those conversations focus on helping customers navigate the shift toward electrification, from EV infrastructure and energy-efficient technologies to automation and digital tools that improve productivity.

At each stop on Westburne’s centennial tour, customers are discussing the trends reshaping Canada’s electrical industry – from electrification and automation to AI and growing infrastructure demand.

Conversations are focused on practical challenges, including productivity, energy efficiency and developing the workforce needed to support Canada’s next generation of projects.

As these priorities continue to evolve, so does the role of electrical distributors. Customers increasingly rely on partners who can do more than supply products. Technical expertise, responsive service and the ability to help navigate increasingly complex technologies have become equally as important as product availability.

Building and sustaining that expertise will depend on attracting and developing the next generation of skilled talent.

Investing in the next generation of trade professionals has become an industry-wide priority. As labour shortages continue to impact projects across the country, supporting students entering electrical and technical fields will be critical to meeting future demand.

Recognizing these challenges, Westburne is marking its centennial by investing in workforce development through a program that will award 12 scholarships across three provinces – Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

The initiative is designed to support students pursuing careers in the field while strengthening the talent pipeline that communities, contractors and industry partners depend on.

Scholarship support ranges from funding for tuition and educational expenses to an experiential opportunity on automation and emerging technologies.

“Workforce development is one of the greatest priorities in our industry right now,” said Mathur. “As demand for skilled trades continues to grow, we all have an important role to play in attracting and supporting the next generation of talent. Our scholarship program is one way we’re investing in the future, building on a history of sharing expertise and helping develop the workforce our industry depends on.”

Westburne’s centennial celebrations will continue in Edmonton and Mississauga in September, marking the final stops in the company’s cross-country celebration.

Each event reflects a shared commitment to recognizing customers, employees and supplier partners who have contributed to the company’s growth while advancing discussions around the future of Canada’s electrical industry.

For Westburne, reaching 100 years is more than a chance to reflect on the past. It is an opportunity to reaffirm the values that have guided the company for the past 100 years while continuing to support the customers, communities and skilled trades professionals who will help shape the next century of Canada’s electrical industry.
