French crystal maker Lalique has introduced a new collection of decorative objects that celebrate butterflies.
A nature-inspired crystal vase is adorned with a multitude of butterflies whose sculpted wings are enhanced using satin-finished and polished crystal, a signature hallmark of Lalique.
The Papillons vase comes in clear or pink luster as well as a large size in clear or gold-stamped crystal. The vases are shaped in blown or pressed crystal, then sandblasted, satin-finished and polished to enhance the interplay of light and the detail of the wings. This could require up to 12 finishing stages, depending on the version, Lalique said.
The Papillons collection also includes small flat bowls made with the pressed crystal technique, then satin-finished on the back and polished on the inside to reveal brilliance and shine.
And, in a tribute to Lalique’s history as a creator of perfume bottles, the company has re-issued its Butterfly flacon. That was originally launched as a limited edition in 2003. Its floral petal décor, surmounted by two butterflies, is enhanced by a gold stamped finish applied to both the flacon and its stopper.
Papillons is part of Lalique’s exploration of the four elements, this one being air. Butterflies are carried by the “breath of the wind,” Lalique said.
Lalique also introduced another expression of air as an element — Teddy Air, a neo-pop-styled crystal teddy bear that calls to mind a child’s inflatable balloon. It’s available in two sizes and three colors: clear, pink luster and blue luster. The luster versions have a subtly iridescent finish, evoking a metallic balloon.
The sculptures are shaped using an injection technique and then meticulously worked in a cold-glass workshop. After fine-grain sandblasting, the pieces are immersed in a polishing bath to soften the material and achieve a velvety, slightly metallic texture, reinforcing the inflated balloon effect. The underside of the sculptures is then fully polished to allow light to pass through and bring brilliance.
