MARKHAM, ONT. – The Ontario government has awarded a contract to design and build the twin tunnels for the Yonge North Subway Extension to North End Connectors.
The team is comprised of applicant leads and construction prime team members Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd. and Ghella Canada Ltd., and design prime team members EXP Services Inc. and TYPSA Inc.
The contract also includes early works construction of support headwalls for future stations and emergency exit buildings.
Following design completion, major tunnelling will begin along with a separate procurement to build the extension’s stations, rail and systems, states a release.
Recent upgrades at Finch Station are now complete, making it easier to connect the existing Line 1 service to the future subway extension. Other preparatory work such as utility relocations are now underway as well, the release notes.
The Yonge North Subway Extension will transform the commute in York Region, North York and beyond by extending the TTC’s Line 1 service north from Finch Station to Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill. The project includes five stations along an extension of roughly eight kilometres. Once complete it will accommodate over 90,000 daily trips.
The Government of Canada is contributing $2.2 billion in funding for the Yonge North Subway Extension. The amount was not disclosed by the province for this latest project award.
This project is rolled into the province’s $70-billion transit plan for the Greater Toronto Area, which includes the Ontario Line, the Scarborough Subway Extension, the Yonge North Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension.
