The pilot was established with a little over £360,000 of support from the CITB, to enable the four businesses to become accredited GIRI training providers. During the pilot, trainees were asked about steps they took to mitigate errors and their awareness of potential causes, before and after they had completed training programmes.
‘Errors’, in the context of the programme, extend through the design and build process, including failures of clash detection during design, and mistakes during construction.
The businesses involved have trained 4,575 delegates between them, working across 25 projects over 26 months. Over the course of the programme, those who had completed training spotted £92.6m in potential cost of errors.
The programme employs a ‘train the trainer’ approach, with the companies becoming the first four employer GIRI approved training providers. This contributes to low training costs per employee, as training is designed to be delivered in groups of 12 people. On average, cost of training was £79 per person.
On the basis that the training had cost £361,306 and had avoided errors potentially costing up to £92m, GIRI calculated the return on investment of £1 of training as £256.48 in savings.
