NEW YORK — A newly reimagined opened to the public in SoHo here last Saturday, giving people a new way to connect with good design.

The retail arm of The Museum of Modern Art, in its redesigned space on Spring Street, emphasizes accessibility, storytelling and good design, and offers a welcoming gathering space downtown.

“This renovation strengthens the way we connect people to good design — making the experience feel more inclusive, inspiring and dynamic,” said Jesse Goldstine, chief retail officer at MoMA.

The space was redesigned by Peterson Rich Office.

“We wanted to create a space where visitors don’t just shop, but also engage with the stories, ideas and creative thinking behind the objects surrounding them,” Goldstine said. “For some, Soho is their first encounter with the institution, and we’ve created a space to make that moment feel meaningful, memorable and unmistakably MoMA.”

The product assortment has been edited to feature “fewer products, richer narratives and a sharper point of view,” museum officials said. Nearly half of the product assortment will be new to SoHo, including many MoMA Design Store exclusives.

Among the launches is a limited selection of Artek’s Aalto furniture inlaid with Marimekko patterns, a collaboration between the two Finnish design companies. The stacking stool and bench are available at the MoMA Design Store for a limited time.

The store is introducing an “Only NY for MoMA” collection of apparel and home goods that features Micah Belamarich’s Community of New York illustration.

Also debuting within the redesigned store is LOVE NYC by Nina Chanel Abney, a New York-based artist with work in MoMA’s collection. The original work of art marks the first iteration of Modern Mural — a collaboration between the Museum and MoMA Design Store that brings contemporary art into the space through a rotating program of works.
