ST. THOMAS, ONT.- Volkswagen’s PowerCo Canada is marking a “pivotal” milestone at its St. Thomas gigafactory project with the start of construction on three major buildings.

With contracts awarded to two Ontario-based companies, concrete pouring is officially underway at the $7 billion EV manufacturing facility, laying the foundation for the 350-acre industrial site.

Magil Construction Canada Inc. is leading the foundational work for the three buildings, which involves over 500,000 square feet of formwork, more than 32,000 cubic metres of concrete, and approximately 4,850 metric tonnes of rebar. Steel erection by Canadian partner Steelcon is set to commence in the coming weeks, explains a release.

Canada’s largest EV battery plant is slated to be in production in 2027.
