Heavy equipment operators are at work in the historic Railyards district in downtown Sacramento, Calif., laying the groundwork for Republic StadiumMajor League Soccer Railyards StadiumStatusPre-Construction/NegotiatedValue$350MLocation11 7th St, Sacramento CA 95811SectorPrivateTypeArenas / Stadiums · New ConstructionData as of June 2, 2026View Project Page →, a landmark, soccer-specific venue that will be the largest professional sports and entertainment arena in the region.
The 20,000-seat facility, which will anchor a major transformation of the city’s core, is taking shape on a 31-acre parcel of ancestral lands of the Wilton Rancheria tribal nation. It will be home to Sacramento Republic FC of the United Soccer League, owned by the Indigenous people.
The project represents a significant milestone not only for the club but also for the redevelopment of a site that has remained largely vacant for decades.
Preparatory work was completed in late 2025, and crews are now focused on installing essential infrastructure, including underground utilities, storm drainage systems and new streets. Those early-stage improvements are necessary before construction can move into the foundation phase and eventually the vertical construction of the stadium itself.
In addition to soccer, the stadium will be capable of hosting 27,000 people for concerts, festivals and special events.

“This stadium is reclaiming our space and matching the ambition of the region,” said Wilton Rancheria chairman Jesus Tarango. “We’re proud to deliver a 20,000-plus-seat, soccer-first stadium and a home where community comes together and our collective future takes shape.”
The facility itself will cover about 14 acres and encompass more than 500,000 square feet. Unlike many modern sports venues that are expanded in phases over time, project leaders decided to build the full-sized stadium from the outset, reflecting confidence in both the club’s popularity and Sacramento’s growing stature as a sports and entertainment destination.
“Building bigger is a catalytic investment in the long-term transformation of downtown Sacramento,” explained Chris Franklin, COO for Wilton Rancheria. “Wilton Rancheria is bringing the capital, vision and execution needed to turn this site into a destination that drives economic impact, community connection and sustained growth for the entire region.”
One of the most striking aspects of the project will be its roof canopy, a feature that supporters repeatedly requested during the design process.
Every seat in the stadium will be covered by the massive overhead structure, providing protection from Sacramento’s intense summer sun while preserving the open-air atmosphere fans enjoy. The field itself will remain exposed to the elements, allowing the evening breeze to flow through the venue and naturally cool spectators.
The canopy is designed with an innovative edge profile intended to reduce glare and shadows on the playing surface, improving visibility for both fans and players.
Supporting the roof will be four enormous steel trusses spanning the stadium. Together, the trusses will weigh 3,800 tons. Once erected, the structures are expected to become a defining feature of the city skyline and a recognizable architectural signature for the venue.
Engineers have also incorporated several passive cooling elements. Open corner terraces and perforated exterior cladding will allow air to move freely through the building, helping maintain comfort during the summer months while reducing reliance on mechanical cooling systems.
The five-storey seating bowl has been configured to bring spectators as close to the action as league regulations permit. Designers say the steeply raked seating will create an intense atmosphere by surrounding the pitch with a continuous wall of fans.
A dedicated supporters’ section will accommodate approximately 1,500 standing fans.
Premium offerings will include 33 luxury suites, club seating areas and more than 35,000 square feet of all-inclusive hospitality space. A new premium tower will provide elevated viewing opportunities for corporate clients and premium ticket holders.
The stadium’s concourse areas have been designed as destinations in their own right. Plans include a supporters’ plaza, a large food market, grab-and-go concessions and more than 3,000 square feet of retail space.
Technology will also play a major role in the fan experience. Twin video boards, expected to be among the largest installed in soccer-specific stadiums, will provide enhanced game presentation and event programming.
The stadium is the catalyst for a multibillion-dollar redevelopment effort that will create an entirely new downtown neighbourhood. Future plans for the surrounding district include housing, hotels, retail development and additional community amenities.
Wilton Rancheria officials say the project is both an economic development initiative and a cultural undertaking, reconnecting the tribe with ancestral lands while creating a gathering place for the broader region.
“For years, we have known what our fans deserve and what this region is capable of supporting,” said Republic FC managing partner Kevin Nagle. “The response to groundbreaking removed any remaining doubt. A 20,000-seat Republic Stadium – with a roof over every seat, safe standing for our supporters, and world-class amenities throughout – is not an overreach. It is exactly the venue Sacramento has earned, and we are proud to deliver it.”
Construction will continue through 2027 as crews move from infrastructure installation to foundations, structural steel and the massive canopy system. The stadium is expected to be completed in 2028.
