SCARBOROUGH, ONT. – Eastern Construction is providing a sneak peek of the progress that’s underway for the Toronto Police Service 41 Division project in Scarborough.
According to a LinkedIn post from the company, inside partition framing and most of the mechanical and electrical rough-ins are complete. Drywall installation has also now started.
Outside, air and vapour barrier membrane and insulation for the metal panels have been installed, with green roof work set to begin soon. Landscaping work has also started.
The revitalization of 41 Division at Birchmount and Ellesmere is set to become the first net-zero emission police building in Ontario.
According to Eastern, the two-storey facility will use geothermal energy, enhanced energy recovery air handling systems, solar PV generation and will feature a high-performance building envelope.
Designed by WZMH Architects, the 60,000-square-foot building will have a sloped roof with approximately 260 solar panels, generating more than 100,000 kWh of energy annually.
Originally built in 1961, Scarborough Police Headquarters shared the 3.5 acres space with the Magistrates Court for 18 years before obtaining exclusive use. The new 41 Division is being constructed on the existing building site.
Eastern states as the project moves towards the finish line phasing will continue to be the biggest challenge.
In the coming weeks, the Toronto Police Service will move from its existing parking lot to the new parking lot so that work can begin to replace the existing lot, all while maintaining operations.
Another major challenge will be removing the hoarding wall located between the two buildings, one of which is an active police station.
