BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Interior designer, antique collector and Odette owner Laura Vogtle has opened a new store, her second, here in Birmingham, Ala.
Called Odette, the 7,000 square-foot shop is filled with furniture from Lee Industries and other brands; accessories and candles; and plenty of vintage merchandise. “It’s very heavy on antiques and accessories,” Vogtle said during a conversation at High Point Market last month. “There are a lot of antique stores, but I’m focusing on accessories really hard.”
The Odette store is part of Pepper Place, a former Dr. Pepper bottling plant that now serves as a revitalized warehouse district and is part of the area’s Lakeview Design District. The store’s former owner, a furniture retailer, was ready to retire but did not want to leave his employees high and dry, Vogtle said. So, he approached Vogtle, who owns the Design Supply store a few doors away, about acquiring the business. Odette debuted earlier this year.
Vogtle has run Design Supply, a home décor store, for the past eight years. Design Supply carries furniture, antiques and home décor as well as a large assortment of original artwork (it represents artists from around the country.) Design Supply, a white and airy, window-filled space and Odette, with its brick walls and manufacturing past, support and complement one another, Vogtle said.

“Richard [Tubb, the former store owner] has been a treasured friend and a cornerstone of our Pepper Place community,” Sloss Real Estate Company Chairman Cathy Sloss Jones told Bham Now last fall. “His vision and artistry have shaped more than just spaces—they’ve shaped the spirit of our entire neighborhood. We are forever grateful and look forward to seeing beautiful interiors and artistic talent continue in this space.”
