Robert Highsmith and Stefanie Brechbuehler, the husband-and-wife team behind the design firm Workstead, have a soft spot for peculiar objects made with care.

“I’m just really drawn toward unexpected heirlooms,” Mr. Highsmith said, “or things I come across in the world that feel like they’ve somehow lasted because they represented something of meaning or integrity to someone along the line.”

Mr. Highsmith, 43, is the couple’s lead pack rat, Ms. Brechbuehler said. “I married a collector, and his passion has filled our home with objects that reflect what he thinks about, loves, or is curious to explore more deeply,” she said.

She doesn’t mind indulging Mr. Highsmith’s quirky interests in the least. “Being surrounded by these meaningful pieces is inspiring,” she said.

Mr. Highsmith and Ms. Brechbuehler, 47, packed up their many finds, which range from ancient urns to midcentury modern furniture, when they moved from a farmhouse in Salisbury, Conn., to Charleston, S.C., last year. Then they put many of their favorite pieces on display in the living room, so they can enjoy them every day.

A few key items help make their living room feel like a special place.
