OTTAWA – Algonquin College recently announced Merit Ontario has sponsored the renovation of a learning space at the Ottawa campus to convert it into a fully equipped electrical training lab.
The new lab, located in the B Building, has been named the Merit Ontario Electrical Lab, explains a release from Algonquin, adding it is now the second electrical lab in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE).
“The expansion of our facilities supports our growth and reflects the new curriculum standard for electrical apprenticeships that has been launched in Ontario,” said Katherine Root, dean of the ACCE, in a statement. “Part of the revised curriculum standard puts greater emphasis on advanced fire alarm systems. The Merit Ontario Electrical Lab addresses this need and provides our apprentices with a dedicated space where they can further master these skills.”
The new space increases ACCE’s capacity and modernizes the Electrical Techniques – Apprenticeship program as part of a broader effort to harmonize apprenticeship training across Canada.
“We believe education transforms lives, so the Merit Ontario Electrical Lab is more than just a name — it’s a statement of our values,” said Troy Heath, Merit Ontario’s director of operations and training. “Supporting the trades is a social responsibility we take quite seriously because it represents a strategic investment in Ontario’s workforce. We’re proud to partner with Algonquin College to provide learners with the facilities they need to thrive.”
