The new facility’s location, at 168 Colborne St. W., was announced in August of last year and is directly adjacent to the organization’s current home at 39 Mount Pleasant St., allowing Lansdowne to remain in the heart of the community.

Since that announcement, Lansdowne’s Capital Steering Committee worked with the Ontario government to advance the development plan to the next stage.

“Selecting our architect is an exciting and meaningful milestone for Lansdowne. This moment reflects years of planning, collaboration and advocacy, and it brings us one step closer to creating a space that truly supports the children and families we serve. We are deeply grateful for the commitment of the Ontario government and for the incredible work of our capital steering committee in moving this project forward,” said Rita-Marie Hadley, executive director, Lansdowne Children’s Centre.

The accredited children’s treatment centre has been serving the Brantford community since 1974 and provides specialized assessment, therapy and support services to infants, children and youth with physical, developmental and/or communication needs and their families.

In addition to the City of Brantford, the centre services the counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk, Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

The centre, that started on Preston Boulevard in the Lansdowne Public School, relocated to its current location in 1998 and also has sites in Caledonia, Dunnville and Simcoe to service almost 4,000 children and youth.

Due to a lack of space and an increased demand for services, they have outgrown their current 25,000-square-foot home and had been looking for a site for a new centre for the past several years.

The new space is slated to be a three-storey, approximately 100,000-square-foot facility, which will be sustainably designed to support expanded programs, interdisciplinary collaboration and enhanced access to services for children and families as demand continues to grow.

“With the architect now selected, the project enters an exciting new phase focused on detailed design and site development to bring the vision for the new centre to life,” stated the Lansdowne Children’s Centre website.

The reported cost of the project is $100 million, with the City of Brantford approving a contribution of $2 million to be dispersed over the course of five-years. Funding will also come from private donations.

“Montgomery Sisam Architects are excited to be working with Lansdowne Children’s Centre on this transformational project. The new building represents an incredible opportunity to create an inspiring, purpose-built space that’s family-centred, community-focused and responsive to evolving needs. We look forward to collaborating with Lansdowne, families and partners to realize your vision,” said Santiago Kunzle, principal of Montgomery Sisam Architects.
