WHITBY, ONT. – The Town of Whitby has assumed operations of its landmark $154.9 million recreation facility as final preparations continue toward its Sept. 12 grand opening.
The handover of the town’s largest recreation project marks substantial completion of construction and now means commissioning can begin along with installing equipment and furnishings, training staff and completing final operational readiness activities.
According to a release, the complex was shaped through years of planning, community engagement and collaboration to support Whitby’s growing population.
Located west of Baldwin Street South and south of Highway 407, the approximately 15,200-square-metre facility will serve as a destination for recreation, sport and community connection.
Designed by Perkins + Will Architecture and built by Ledcor it features an aquatic centre with a 25-metre, 10-lane pool, separate leisure pool and second floor spectator viewing area, which will make the complex home to the largest pool in Durham Region. It will also include a double gymnasium, with three-lane indoor walking track; a twin-pad arena with 85-foot-by-190-foot ice pads; and spaces to support community programs, meetings and arts and cultural activities.
