Showcasing the work local artists is important for independent retailers, but it needs to be addressed carefully, say retailers Edward Nader of Nader’s Gallery in Shreveport, La., and Jamie Merida of Bountiful Home in Easton, Md. Here’s what they said in Home Accents Today‘s Accessory Playbook:

“I promote a couple of local artists in our showroom, but I find they need to be vetted properly, and they need to understand how this business works. Local businesses work hard to show off someone’s work so I’m very prudent in who I bring in.”—Edward Nader
“We have great local artists who we’ll promote in shop shows. The events are live for a month. We find it more successful to focus local art on its own in this way so it stands apart from the decorative art in our showroom.” —Jamie Merida
